John Piper in the South Country.
Free exhibition visit to the Wiltshire Museum Devizes: Friday 8 May and Thursday 4 June
This year, one of our Arts Project initiatives is the sponsorship of exhibitions at the Wiltshire Museum in Devizes. As thanks for our sponsorship, the Museum's Director, David Dawson, has kindly agreed to introduce a free visit for our Society members to their current exhibition on Friday 8 May and again on Thursday 4 June, both from 2.30-4.00 pm.
It was in the South West that John Piper made some of his most important paintings yet this is the first ever exhibition devoted to showing how he responded to the landscape and architecture of Wiltshire and Dorset, including his favourite market town of Devizes.
John Piper is considered one of the most significant British artists of the 20th century. This exhibition will feature some of his finest early collages depicting the neolithic site at Avebury together with paintings of a number of local landmarks including Stourhead, Fonthill and Lacock. As an official war artist, Piper concentrated on painting bombed churches depicting architectural ruins in cities such as Bath and Bristol.
The curator
The guest curator for the exhibition is the renowned author and art critic, Andrew Lambeth. Andrew believes that "Piper's enduring appeal resides in his ability to celebrate buildings in the landscape, from the stone circles of neolithic man to churches, cottages and grand houses across Wiltshire and Dorset." Also on show in the exhibition will be the stained glass window which Piper designed specifically for the Devizes Museum.
