The Adoration of the Magi has been an ever popular subject for Italian artists since the dawn of the Christian era. In this talk, Keith Dugdale will illustrate the origins of the story of the Magi and trace its artistic development from Roman times through to the High Renaissance. Taking one subject, and reflecting on how artists have treated it over the centuries, can be a great way to appreciate the development of Italian art and the forces which shaped our understanding of art history. Ten paintings and a thousand years of Italian art, what better way to spend 20 minutes than in the company of the Magi.
